LABRATORY TESTING
Our in-house laboratory provides rigorous materials testing and quality assurance services to support construction, design, and regulatory compliance throughout Pennsylvania, Maryland, New Jersey, and Delaware. By combining field inspection, geotechnical insight, and our own in-house soil science laboratory, we deliver a seamless pathway from site to specification by keeping many processes under one roof.

We are equipped to perform a broad suite of tests on construction materials and site samples, delivering reliable data to inform design, quality control, and compliance.
- Compressive strength testing (cylinders, cubes)
- Flexural strength, tensile splitting tests
- Mortar compressive strength
- Grout compressive strength
- Masonry unit absorption, dimensional tolerances (upon request)
- Grain size distribution / sieve analysis
- Atterberg limits (liquid & plastic limits)
- Proctor (standard & modified) and relative density tests
- Specific gravity, absorption, voids, bulk and dry density
- Gradation, moisture content, organic content
- Gradation, bitumen content, binder testing
- Marshall mix design, volumetrics (upon request)
- Compaction curves, density, stability tests (upon request)
- Performance tests (rutting, fatigue, etc.) (upon request)
- Chloride and sulfate content for concrete exposure assessment
- pH, resistivity, permeability for corrosion risk evaluations
- Freeze-thaw resistance, absorption / porosity tests
- Petrographic examination, material condition assessment
- Supplementary lab support for investigations, failure analysis, rehabilitation
- Durability testing: per ASTM protocols (e.g. freeze-thaw, rapid chloride permeability, sulfate)
- Supplementary cementitious material characterization (fly ash, slag, silica fume)
This process includes examining the substrate, evaluating ambient conditions, and reviewing the completed application. Field tests are conducted to measure thickness, density, and bond strength, ensuring the SFRM is correctly applied and meets the required fire-resistance rating.
Why
Choose IES
for Laboratory Services
- Local/Regional Presence – Based in Pennsylvania, we are accessible and understand the material, climate, and regulatory nuances of PA, MD, NJ, and DE.
- Turnaround and Responsiveness – We strive for timely results, clear reporting, and responsive customer support. We control the lab process to mitigate project delays.
- Accreditation & Standards Adherence – Our lab operates under recognized standards (ASTM, ACI, etc.), ensuring reliability and defensibility of results.
- Cross-Discipline Coordination – Our lab is tightly coordinated with field inspection, structural, geotechnical, and remediation efforts, producing cohesive and actionable recommendations.
- Constructability & Cost-Aware Mindset – We aim to balance performance with economy, identifying material alternatives or adjustments when appropriate to save cost without compromising quality.
- Informed Design & Selection – Test data helps engineers, architects, and owners make evidence-based decisions about mix design, materials choice, and construction tolerances.
- Quality Control & Assurance – Regular testing during construction ensures that materials meet specifications, reducing risk of defects, rework, or structural issues.
- Regulatory & Code Compliance – Our lab results support permit checks, code reviews, and third-party inspections.
