Simplifying Complexity with Engineering

Engineering challenges rarely exist in a vacuum. The best technical solution still has to account for the realities of the site, available materials, access, construction methods, budget, and what can practically be accomplished.

A recent Ingram Engineering project in the Caribbean is a great example of how simplifying complexity can turn a difficult problem into an actionable engineering solution.

When Erosion Begins to Threaten Structures

Ingram Engineering Services was retained to evaluate severe erosion along a limestone cliff adjacent to private villas at a five-star Caribbean resort.

Over time, tidal activity has eroded portions of the limestone shoreline. Approximately ten years ago, offshore breakwaters were installed near the villas to help reduce the effects of continued tidal erosion. While those improvements helped, erosion of the existing rock face has continued.

In some areas, the deterioration has progressed beneath the villas themselves, leaving portions of the properties beginning to overhang the shoreline. Chadd Ingram, P.E., traveled to the island to inspect the conditions firsthand, collect samples of the eroded limestone, and evaluate potential stabilization methods. The engineering challenge quickly became more than simply determining how to fill a void.

Developing a Controlled Approach

Based on the existing conditions, Ingram developed an interim approach using low-pressure grouting.

The concept is relatively straightforward: introduce an engineered grout mixture into eroded areas along the cliff face and beneath impacted portions of the villas to fill voids and provide additional support. The execution requires considerably more thought.

Pressure must be carefully controlled. Applying grout too aggressively could further damage or even blow out portions of the already weakened limestone face. The grout mixture, placement equipment, sequencing, and field procedures all need to work together.

And then there is another challenge: the site is on an island accessible primarily by boat.

Engineering Around What Is Available

An engineered solution isn’t particularly useful if it can’t be built. Transporting conventional equipment and materials to this site is difficult and expensive, so Ingram is working with a local concrete plant to develop a grout mix using products that are readily available on the island while still meeting the requirements of the proposed application. For materials and specialized equipment that cannot be sourced locally, Ingram is determining exactly what will be required and planning for transportation to the site by barge.

That means the engineering process has to consider the entire operation:

  • What materials are available locally?
  • What grout characteristics are required?
  • What equipment is necessary to properly mix, pump, and control placement?
  • What must be transported to the island?
  • How can the work be completed without causing additional damage to the existing rock face or villas?

This is where practical engineering becomes especially important.

A Solution for Today and a Plan for Tomorrow

Low-pressure grouting is intended to address the immediate areas of concern and help stabilize conditions beneath the impacted villas. It is not being presented as the permanent answer to the larger shoreline erosion problem.

Longer-term stabilization may eventually require more extensive measures, potentially including techniques such as soil nailing, structural facing, or shotcrete/gunite placement, depending on future investigation, design, and site conditions.

Recognizing that distinction is an important part of engineering. Sometimes the right solution is not to immediately undertake the largest possible project. It is to understand the risk, address the immediate concern, and develop a practical path toward a longer-term solution.

Whether a project is on a Caribbean island or a construction site in Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Delaware, or Maryland, the underlying philosophy is the same.

Understand the problem. Work with the conditions that actually exist. Develop a solution that can be built.
